The Step After Someone Says Go

There are four folders on the desk.

One says Neighborhood Meals. One says Tuesday Study. One says Volunteer Network. The fourth carries the name of a project that lasted eleven energetic days and then stopped answering its own questions.

The fifth folder is blank.

Your hand rests on it anyway.

You know what could go inside. The plan is already assembling itself. You can see the first meeting, the shared document, the list of people who would understand why this matters. Starting is not difficult for you. Starting feels like breathing after a closed room.

But the four folders are still there.

That does not make you faithless or foolish. It does mean the fifth folder deserves a better question than, Could I begin this?

Of course you could.

The question is whether you have been sent.

What if your strongest ability to begin is not the same thing as permission to begin again?

The word begins with sending

The apostolic function is often treated as a title, a rank, or a claim to authority. Put all of that down.

The word carries a simpler action: one who is sent.

In Acts 13, the church at Antioch is worshiping and fasting when the Holy Spirit says to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He has called them. The community fasts, prays, lays hands on them, and sends them away. Then the text says they are sent forth by the Holy Spirit.

The movement has an address behind it.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.Acts 13:4

They do not look at their capacity and appoint themselves. They do not choose a grand title and then search for work large enough to match it. A call is named, a community recognizes it, and the Spirit sends.

That pattern does not give us a formula for every assignment. It does give us a distinction sturdy enough to use: sending comes from outside your restlessness.

Restlessness says, "I need to move."

Sending says, "Go there."

One reports your internal pressure. The other gives direction.

And you are not required to manufacture your own address. The word says they were sent forth by the Holy Ghost and puts the sending outside the two men entirely, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that a relief rather than a delay to somebody with a hand on a blank folder.

Ability is a gift, not a command

You may truly be gifted at beginnings.

You see a missing structure before other people notice the gap. You can gather a first table, name a purpose, build a workable beginning out of loose pieces. The church needs people who can do that.

But a gift is not self-activating authority.

Being able to open the folder does not mean the folder is assigned. Capacity answers can. Sending answers where, when, and for whom.

This is not meant to make you suspicious of every desire. Desire can carry useful information. Neither is it meant to keep you waiting for a spectacular sign. It is meant to free you from turning the pressure to start into proof that God has commanded a start.

You do not need to take a title to honor your gift.

You do not need authority over anyone to serve faithfully.

And you do not need to announce a sending that has not occurred.

The blank folder can stay closed without becoming evidence that you missed your life.

And your standing was settled before any of the four folders existed. The word says your life is hid with Christ in God, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that a closed folder on a Tuesday does not touch a thing that was settled at the cross.

The four folders do not accuse you

Abandoned projects can produce shame, and shame makes discernment harder.

You may look at those folders and decide you must prove yourself by finishing something new. Or you may decide you are incapable of being sent anywhere. Both conclusions ask the past to speak beyond what it knows.

The folders can be examined without becoming a sentence over you.

And there is no condemnation waiting for you in that drawer. The word says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person look honestly at eleven energetic days without the looking turning into an accusation.

What happened? Was there a clear assignment, or only a strong beginning? Did the need change? Did your role end? Did enthusiasm carry more weight than confirmation? These are questions, not accusations.

You may need to make something right. You may need to close a project honestly. You may need counsel from people who know you and the work. None of that turns you into a lesser member of Christ's body.

Most believers are not called into one of these five equipping functions, and no one is lesser for that. Ephesians 4 is not building an aristocracy. It is describing gifts that equip everybody else for ministry.

If a function rises above the body, it has forgotten its purpose.

And you are a full member of that body right now. The word says the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee, and it says the parts that seem feeble are necessary, and the Spirit is the one who makes that true of a person holding no title at all.

The step and the stillness

The physical action for this article contains both parts.

Take one step forward.

Then stop.

The step honors your readiness to obey. The stillness refuses to manufacture an instruction.

You can hold both. You are not paralyzed, and you are not self-launched. You are available without appointing yourself.

And you are able to stand still without that being failure. The word says in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, and it says it to people under real pressure to move, and the Spirit is the one who supplies that quiet, which nobody generates by deciding to.

This is a mature posture precisely because it does not guarantee that a sending is coming. God may direct you toward a beginning. He may direct you toward faithful work already in your hands. He may leave the fifth folder closed. We do not know, and we will not turn hope into a promise He did not make.

Your standing in Christ is already settled. It does not depend on being sent to start something.
