Which One Is Which

Adaeze has spent eleven years pursuing one thing and quietly resenting another, and last month it occurred to her that she may have had them labeled backwards the entire time.

The one she has pursued is the big one. It is not a bad thing and I am not going to sneer at it. It is a genuine work, it would help real people, and she has moved twice for it and retrained once and given it the best of her attention for over a decade.

It has never quite happened. Not in a dramatic way. It has come close about four times, and each time something moved at the last moment and it did not, and each time she read that as testing and pressed on, because that is what she was taught to do and because pressing on is in her nature.

The one she has resented is small and it has never stopped happening.

People bring her things. Specific people, in specific trouble, at inconvenient hours, and they have been doing it since she was about twenty-three, and she has never once advertised it or asked for it or been any good at getting out of it. It costs her most of her evenings. She has described it to two friends as the thing that keeps getting in the way.

And last month, at the end of a long night, sitting on the edge of a stage with her shoes off after everybody had gone, she heard herself think a sentence that felt like a small landslide.

What if the interruption is the assignment?

She did not want that thought. She would like the record to show that. Eleven years is a lot of moving and retraining to look at sideways at half past eleven at night.

You have your own version. There is something you have been chasing and something you have been complaining about, and there is a possibility, which you have not let fully arrive, that you have had the two of them the wrong way round.

Nobody is going to tell you tonight which is which. That is not mine to say and it would be arrogant to try from here.

But there is a difference between being led and being driven, and it is findable.

The verb is passive, and the whole thing turns on that

There is a line in Romans that gets quoted about identity and is actually about motion.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.Romans 8:14

Are led. It is passive. It is a thing done to a person rather than by them.

That matters enormously here, because there is another way to move that is grammatically active and feels almost identical from the inside, and Scripture has a different word for it. Being driven is what happens to a ship in a storm, and James uses exactly that image, and the sailors on a driven ship are extremely busy and going somewhere and have no say in any of it.

Both look like movement. Both produce effort, travel, sacrifice, and the appearance of purpose.

The difference is not the amount of motion. It is whether the motion can stop.

And you are led rather than driven. That is not my flattery: the written word puts the sons of God in the passive voice of that sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who is named as the one doing the leading, which means the initiative was never yours to generate and has never once depended on your momentum.

And you have not wasted eleven years by being wrong. The word says all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose, and the called is who that promise is addressed to, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a floor under a woman at half past eleven at night rather than a slogan on a wall.

The tell, and it is not spiritual sounding

Here is the practical difference, and it is almost embarrassingly plain.

The thing you are driven toward cannot be put down without anxiety. The thing you are led into can be put down and it stays where you left it, because it was never being held up by you.

Notice what that means for Adaeze. The big work needs her constant attention or it stops. She has kept it alive for eleven years by force, through four near misses, by pressing on. That is not a criticism of her and it is not proof the thing is false, but it is information: a thing that only exists while she pushes is a thing being pushed.

The small one has never needed her to keep it going. It arrives whether or not she wants it. She has actively tried to reduce it and it has not reduced. It has survived eleven years of her treating it as an interruption, which is a remarkable thing for a work to survive.

And what has survived your resentment is worth looking at. The word says a man's gift maketh room for him, and maketh room is the gift's own verb rather than the person's, and the Spirit is the one who has been making that room for eleven years in a woman who was busy pointing in the other direction.

And you are not being told the big one was false. Nothing here says that. I do not know your life and it may be entirely real and still ahead. The Spirit of God is not required to explain His timing to anybody and He has never once been obliged to tell a person why a door held.

Nobody is asking you to decide tonight

I want to be very plain, because this is the paragraph where a message like this makes somebody blow up eleven years at midnight.

Do not resign anything. Do not send a message. Do not walk away from the big work on the strength of a page you read on a Tuesday, and do not go and tell the people who have watched you chase it that you have discovered it was a mistake, because you have not discovered that and neither have I.

What has happened tonight is much smaller. A question has arrived that you had been keeping out. That is all, and it is enough, and it does not require an action.

And you are safe to hold the question open. Not once it resolves: the word says perfect love casteth out fear, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to make an empty room at half past eleven a place where a woman can look at eleven years without panic.

And you will not be left to guess indefinitely. The word says the meek He will guide in judgment, and the meek He will teach His way, and the guiding and the teaching are His verbs, and the Spirit is the one who does that work at a pace that is not yours to set.
