What Grows In The Gap

This message is for the small bitterness that has started growing in the gap between what you saw and what anybody did about it, and that you have never once called by its name

Stuart noticed it in his own voice, which is the only way anybody ever notices it.

He was describing something to his wife. A decision that had been made without him, again, in a place where he has been for a long time and where he cares about the people genuinely and would defend every one of them to a stranger.

And he heard the tone of his own sentence, and the tone had something in it that had not been there five years ago.

It was not anger. He would have caught anger. Anger announces itself, and he is not a man who is angry very often, and when he is he says so and it passes.

This was flatter. It was a small dryness on one side of a sentence, a slight relish in the delivery that had nothing to do with the content, and it lasted about two seconds and then he moved on and his wife did not react and probably did not hear it.

He heard it.

And he has thought about it since, on and off, for a fortnight, because he knows what it is even though he does not want to name it, and the reason he does not want to name it is that naming it seems to imply the disappointment was not real.

That is the trap in this and it is worth getting out of early.

The disappointment is real. He has seen things clearly in that place for eleven years, has said them properly and without drama, and has been consistently unheeded in a way that would be hard to describe to anybody outside it, because there is no villain and there has been no cruelty and everybody has been perfectly nice about it the entire time.

Something can grow in that. It grows in the gap between what you saw and what got done, and it grows in exactly the people who care, because indifferent people do not have gaps.

You have your own version. There is a small dryness that has started appearing in how you talk about something, and you heard it once and pushed it away.

Nobody here is going to tell you the disappointment was not warranted. It almost certainly was.

But something is growing in the gap, and it is easier to deal with now than in five years.

What Grows In The Gap

The verse is about noticing early, not about condemning

There is a line in Hebrews that gets quoted at people as an accusation and is written as a piece of husbandry.

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.Hebrews 12:15

Looking diligently. That is the instruction, and it is the whole tone of the verse. It is not repent of your bitterness. It is watch for it, the way you would watch a garden, because of what it is: a root, which is to say a thing that is underground and small and unremarkable at the point where it can still be dealt with easily.

And notice the verb that goes with it. Springing up. By the time it springs up, it has been rooted for a while. The visible part is late.

That is why Stuart heard it in his own voice rather than finding it in his heart. The voice is where it springs up. The root has been down there for a couple of years, quietly, in a man who has done nothing wrong at all except see clearly and go unheeded.

And you are not being accused tonight. That is not my softening: the written word gives this as a watching instruction rather than a charge, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a man who has been going over a two second tone for a fortnight.

And noticing it is the Spirit's work in you, not evidence against you. The word says He will reprove the world of sin, and that He guides into all truth, and it is the Spirit who does that showing, which means the fact that you heard your own sentence at all is Him being kind rather than you being caught.

Why this particular ministry grows this particular root

Now the part that matters for somebody with sight.

Bitterness does not grow well in people who see nothing. It needs two things: something genuinely perceived, and something genuinely not acted on. Take either away and it does not take.

Which means the person most exposed to it is not the person who has been treated worst. It is the person who was right and was not followed, repeatedly, by people they cannot bring themselves to blame.

That is a precise description of what an unheeded sight does over a decade, and it is why this category needs a whole article about it. The gift itself digs the hole. Not the people, and not any failure in you.

And you are not defective for having a gap. The word puts the root in a passage about running a race and enduring, addressed to people who are tired rather than to people who are wicked, and the Spirit is the one who lets that land as company rather than as a warning.

And the grace is what you are being told to look at. Notice the order in that verse: lest any man fail of the grace of God comes first, and the root comes second, as the thing that grows when the first happens. The word puts the supply before the symptom, and the Spirit is the one who makes grace a thing a person can actually reach for rather than a word in a sentence.

What the discipline is actually protecting

This is where the dating comes in, and it is not a filing habit.

When you write the thing down and put a date on it and leave it alone, you are doing something specific: you are putting the sight outside yourself, into a form that does not require anybody's agreement, and then declining to build a case with it.

A case is what a root feeds on. A case needs to be maintained. It needs the memory kept fresh, the evidence rehearsed, the tone practiced, and every one of those is watering.

A dated page in a drawer needs nothing. It sits there being true whether or not anybody ever reads it, and it takes the whole matter out of your chest and puts it into paper, which is exactly where the prophets in the Bible kept theirs.

And you are permitted to stop carrying the case. Not once you have been heard: the word says casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you, and the casting is a throwing word rather than a setting-down word, and the Spirit is the one who makes that possible with a thing you have been holding for eleven years.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it happens on paper.

Write the thing down. The current one, in plain words, the way you would say it if you were being fair to everybody in the room.

Put today's date on it.

Then leave it alone. Do not add the history to it. Do not write the part about how many times you have said it, because that is not the sight, that is the case, and the case is the thing that has been growing.

You are able to put it down. Not once somebody listens: the word says looking diligently, which is a present and repeatable action rather than a final achievement, and the Spirit is the one who makes it possible to do that tonight without having resolved anything.

And nothing is being taken from you by letting go of the case. The sight stays. The word says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that clear in a person who has just been asked to stop rehearsing.

Write it. Date it. Leave the rest out of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two second dryness in my own voice, you are a late symptom and you have been rooted a while. Scripture says look diligently lest a root of bitterness spring up, and springing up is what happens long after the digging.
  2. Old case I have been maintaining, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. You need the memory kept fresh and the tone practiced to survive, and I am done watering you.
  3. Lord, You told us to look diligently and You put the grace before the root in the same sentence. You gave me eyes for this and being unheeded is part of the job, and writing it down and dating it and leaving it alone is what I am doing tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
