TeacherEcclesiastes 3:7

The Silence You Never Leave

This message is for the three seconds after you finish a thought, which you have never once let run, because you are the one who cannot bear them

Aoife has never let three seconds run, and she found out why last winter, and it was not what she expected.

She teaches a small group. Twelve or so. She is good at it and people say so and she does not think they are being kind.

She had assumed her problem, if she had one, was pace. She talks a little quickly when she is interested, which is most of the time, and she has worked on that over the years and improved it.

The actual thing is different and it is not about speed.

It is that she finishes a thought and then, within about a second, starts the next one. Every time. There is never a gap.

She noticed because of a recording she made for somebody who had missed a week, and listening back she heard the whole hour as a continuous surface with no seams in it, and she thought: nobody could get in there.

And then, because she is honest, she asked why she does it, and the answer arrived faster than she wanted.

The three seconds are not uncomfortable for the room. She has watched rooms be perfectly happy in a silence. They are uncomfortable for her.

Specifically: in the gap, she does not know if it landed. And not knowing is a thing she can avoid, entirely, by simply beginning the next sentence.

You have your own version. There is a gap you close, reliably, and you have probably filed it under keeping momentum.

Nobody here is going to hand you a rule about pausing. Counting to three in your head while teaching is a technique and everybody can tell.

But there is a line in Ecclesiastes about silence that puts it in a surprising category.

The Silence You Never Leave

It is listed as a time, which means it is a thing

There is a verse in the famous passage about seasons that includes one most people read past.

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.Ecclesiastes 3:7

A time to keep silence.

Notice the structure of the whole chapter. Everything in it is paired, and the pairs are not good and bad. Rending and sewing are both listed and neither is condemned; they are activities appropriate to their moments.

Which means silence is not an absence in that list. It is one of the two things, paired with speaking, with equal standing.

And that is a strange thought for a teacher, because it makes the gap part of the work rather than a hole in it.

And the silence is a thing you are doing rather than a thing not happening. That is not my reframe: the written word lists keeping silence as its own time alongside speaking, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a woman listening back to a recording of herself.

And you are not required to know whether it landed. The word says God gave the increase, and the giving is His, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a genuine release to somebody who has been managing an entire hour to avoid a feeling.

What the gap is for, from their side

Here is the part that matters, because knowing why you close it is not enough to open it.

Three seconds is roughly what a person needs to move a thought from the front of their mind to somewhere it will stay.

That is not a mystical claim. It is what people do in a gap: they finish the sentence internally, or they check it against something they already believe, or they notice a question. All of that requires the room to stop making noise.

An hour without seams is an hour in which twelve people have been given a great deal and have not once been given the second and a half it takes to put any of it anywhere.

Which is why Aoife's group, who genuinely enjoy her sessions, could not tell you very much a fortnight later.

That is not a failure of her material. It is a lack of gaps.

And what you have been giving them is good. The word says give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine, and it commends the work rather than tolerating it, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit about the years you have put in.

And the landing is not yours to manufacture. The word says the anointing which ye have received teacheth you of all things, and the teaching happens in them, and the Spirit is the one who does that work in a gap you did not fill.

Nobody is telling you to pause deliberately

I want that plain, because the obvious application is a technique and techniques are visible.

Do not count. Do not build pauses into your notes. A woman pausing on purpose for effect is doing a performance, and the room will feel managed, and it is worse than the seamless hour.

The change is upstream of that.

If you cut one sentence, a gap appears on its own. Not a performed pause: an actual small hole where a sentence used to be, and you will be standing in it, and it will be uncomfortable for exactly as long as it takes somebody to fill it, and they will.

That is the difference. You are not adding a silence. You are removing something that was covering one.

And you are able to bear three seconds. The word says God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and the Spirit is the one who supplies that at the exact second a person feels most exposed.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it makes a hole rather than filling one.

Cut one sentence.

Any sentence, in the middle of what you are going to say. Not the ending and not the hardest part. One ordinary sentence from the middle of a section.

What you will find is that a gap opens where it was, and that you did not have to plan the gap or perform it, and that you will be standing in it slightly uncomfortable, and that somebody in the room will use it.

A time to keep silence is listed alongside a time to speak. The word gives them equal standing in the same pair, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a real permission rather than a rhetorical device.

And the point is the person hearing it. The word puts the causing to understand in the hearers, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit about who you are serving.

Cut one sentence. Stand in the hole.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Second after a finished thought, you are a gap and you were never a hole. Scripture lists a time to keep silence alongside a time to speak, with both in the same pair and neither condemned.
  2. Old need to know it landed, get out of this room in the name of Jesus. You have had me managing a whole hour to avoid a feeling, and God gave the increase and it was never mine to verify.
  3. Lord, You have not given me a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind, and Your Spirit supplies it at the second I feel most exposed. I was given this to make it plain, the point is the person hearing it, and cutting one sentence is what I am doing.
