The Sigh You Have Learned To Hear

Yusuf can hear it now about half a second before it happens, which means that most of the time it does not have to happen at all.

He is not imagining it. That was his first thought and he spent about a year trying to talk himself out of this, and then he watched it land on somebody else and knew.

It is small. It is a fractional change in a room when he begins a particular kind of sentence. Somebody shifts. Somebody looks at the tablecloth. Nobody is rude, nobody says anything, and if you filmed it and played it back to the people in the room they would honestly not know what you were pointing at.

He knows. He has been reading that room for eleven years.

And here is what has happened over those eleven years, and it is the reason for this article rather than the sigh itself.

The sound has moved inside.

It now happens in his own head, at the point where the sentence forms, before anybody has heard anything. He begins to say the thing, and the anticipated shift arrives, fully formed, in advance, and by the time the words would have come out he has already adjusted them into something smaller.

He does not experience that as being silenced. He experiences it as reading the room, which is a virtue, which is why it has been able to grow for eleven years without ever being examined.

You have your own version. There is a sound you have learned to hear, and it has begun arriving before you speak rather than after, and you have almost certainly filed the whole thing under sensitivity to others.

Nobody here is going to tell you to ignore the room. That would be terrible advice and it would make you harder to be near.

But it is worth knowing whose sigh you have been hearing lately, because for a while now it may not have been theirs.

Paul names the exact feeling and then denies it

There is a sentence in Romans that everybody knows and almost nobody notices is a strange thing to say.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.Romans 1:16

I am not ashamed.

Why would he say that? Nobody has accused him. There is no charge in the letter to answer. He is opening a document to a church he has never met and one of the first things he does is deny a feeling that nobody raised.

You do not deny a feeling that has never been near you.

He says it because he has felt the pull of it. Because there is something about carrying this particular message into rooms that produces exactly the small internal flinch Yusuf has been living with, and Paul knew that flinch well enough to name it and refuse it in the same breath, at the top of the letter, before anything else.

That is a remarkable comfort for somebody who has assumed the flinch is a personal defect.

And your flinch is not evidence that something is wrong with you. That is not my reassurance: the written word has the most confident evangelist in the New Testament opening a letter by denying a feeling he plainly knew, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a man who has been reading rooms for eleven years.

And you are not too much. The word says God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and sound mind is in that list alongside power, which means the thing that makes you say it and the thing that keeps you sane are from the same source, and the Spirit is the one who supplies both.

Where the sigh lives now

Here is the part worth being precise about, because it is the whole difference between this being a message about other people and a message about you.

For the first few years, the sound was in the room. Something happened out there and Yusuf heard it and adjusted.

Somewhere around year six or seven, it moved. He internalized it, the way anybody does with a repeated signal, and now it fires in advance and it fires whether or not the room would actually have produced it.

Which means he has, for several years, been managing an audience that is not present.

That is not a moral failing and it is not paranoia. It is what a nervous system does with a repeated small cost, and it is extremely efficient, and it is why he now edits sentences in rooms full of people who would have been perfectly glad to hear the original.

And you are not obliged to obey a room that is not there. The word says whom the Son makes free is free indeed, and indeed is doing work in that sentence, and the Spirit is the one who makes that reach a habit that has been running for years underneath language.

And what you carry has its own power and does not depend on your delivery. The word calls it the power of God unto salvation, and the power is located in the thing rather than in the one carrying it, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a relief to somebody who has been quietly assuming that the whole weight was in how well he said it.

Nobody is telling you to say more

I want to be very clear, because a message like this can easily send somebody back into a room to prove something.

Do not go and say more this week on the strength of this. Not louder, not more often, and not to the people you have been editing yourself around, because a person who does that is not free, they are reacting, and the room will feel the difference immediately.

And do not decide the people in your life have been unkind to you. Mostly they have not. Mostly they are tired, and busy, and the small shift you hear is not a verdict on the message or on you.

And nothing here is a technique. There is no better way to bring it up and this site is not going to hand you one, because the moment this becomes a method you have stopped being a person and started being a strategy, and people can tell.

And you are not carrying a quota. Nothing in Scripture attaches a number to this, and the Spirit of God has never once assessed somebody by how many conversations they got into, which means the pressure you feel to make each one count is not from Him.
