Leave the Date in the Margin

The date is clearer now than the warning.

You wrote both on the same page eighteen months ago. The warning fills eleven lines in blue ink. The date sits alone in the upper-right corner, underlined once.

At the time, nobody acted.

One person thanked you. Another said they would pray. The meeting moved to the next item. You closed the notebook and told yourself obedience was enough.

Now circumstances have changed. Certain phrases on the page appear sharper than they did when you wrote them. You can already imagine the message above the photograph: I shared this eighteen months ago. You would not need to accuse anyone. The date would do the work.

Your thumb hovers over the camera icon.

You tell yourself recirculating the page might help people pay attention now. That may be possible. There is also another possibility, and accuracy requires naming it: you want later events to prove that your sight was real.

This article will not decide whether the warning came from God. A date cannot prove that. Resemblance to later events cannot prove every line. Your sincerity cannot prove it either.

The question today is narrower.

Are you sending the page again to serve the people who receive it, or to make the date testify for you?

Ezekiel and the temptation to be proved

Ezekiel knew what it was to speak and remain unheeded.

God told him that people discussed him, gathered to hear him, and treated his words like a lovely song while refusing to do them. Then the passage ends:

And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.Ezekiel 33:33

That sentence can feel like permission to wait for vindication.

It is not permission to manufacture it.

Ezekiel received a specific word from God in a specific commission recorded in Scripture. You and I do not borrow his certainty merely because a dated page now resembles events. The text tells us what happened to Ezekiel. It does not automatically validate your warning.

This distinction protects the people hearing you, and it protects you.

Paul gives the church a procedure that refuses both contempt and credulity: "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge." The words are spoken. Others weigh them. The speaker does not become the sole court of appeal.

He also says, "For we know in part, and we prophesy in part."

Partial knowledge is not defective faith. It is the stated condition of this age. A person may perceive something real and understand it incompletely. A warning may contain truth and still carry interpretation that must be tested. A date preserves what was actually said; it does not turn partial knowledge into complete knowledge.

And you are permitted to know in part. The word says we know in part and we prophesy in part and attaches no shame to either half of that sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes a gap bearable to somebody who has been treating every gap as an accusation.

What a date can and cannot do

A date is useful.

It prevents you from improving the memory later. It keeps the wording from drifting toward what would have been more impressive. It allows trusted people to compare what was said with what occurred.

That is honest record-keeping.

A date cannot establish source. It cannot prove motive. It cannot decide whether a broad phrase fits an event because the phrase was accurate or because broad phrases fit many events.

The date belongs in the margin, not on the throne.

This is especially important because memory edits kindly toward the person remembering. We retain the sentence that matched and lose the three that did not. We remember the warning as more specific than it was. We call a resemblance fulfillment before anyone else has weighed it.

The remedy is not shame. It is accountability.

And you are not under condemnation for a memory that edited itself. The word says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is the one who makes an honest re-reading possible without the reading turning into a verdict on the reader.

Put the original words before people who are free to disagree with you and have no need to protect your reputation. Ask them what else the text could mean. Ask which parts are observation, which are interpretation, and which you believed were from God. Do not combine those categories after the fact.

And if accountable people advise you not to circulate the page, their restraint is not evidence that they fear your sight. It is data you are required to take seriously.

The people are not the jury for your identity

The pull to recirculate the warning often comes from an older ache: nobody listened, so perhaps nobody believed you were real.

That ache deserves care. Being unheeded can feel isolating. But the people who receive your message cannot be made responsible for confirming your identity.

And your identity was never in that room's hands to confirm. The word says your life is hid with Christ in God, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that a meeting moving to the next item did not touch what you are.

The ministry functions in Ephesians 4 exist to equip the body, not to create a hierarchy of speakers whose words cannot be tested. A function is service. A title claimed as insulation from testing reverses the passage.

You do not need to appoint yourself to explain why you saw something. You do not need to force the room to revisit its response. You do need to submit what you believe you saw to Scripture, accountable judgment, and the humility of partial knowledge.

That is not burying a gift. It is refusing to make the gift answer to your wound.

And you are free to submit what you saw for testing. The word says let the prophets speak two or three and let the other judge, and it gives that instruction to people who were genuinely hearing from God, and the Spirit is the one who makes being weighed feel like safety rather than insult.

Jesus gives believers authority to speak to mountains, but never authority over another person's judgment or will. The mountain here is the demand to be proved. Speak to that demand, not to the people who did not act.
