The Same Conversation Again

This message is for the conversation you have had with the same person about the same thing for years, with no visible change, and the small tiredness you feel when you see their name come up

Hannah saw the name come up on her phone last Tuesday and felt something she did not like, and it lasted about half a second.

It was not dread. She wants that clear. She loves this person, and would drop things for her, and has.

It was closer to a small sigh, somewhere below language, and what it meant was: I know what this call is about.

Because she does. She has known since about 2016. It is the same thing. Not identical, because the details rotate, but underneath the details it is one situation that has been running for nine years, and Hannah has had, by any honest count, more than a hundred conversations about it.

She has said the same true thing many times. She has said it gently and she has said it plainly and once, four years ago and badly, she said it with an edge on it and had to apologize.

Nothing has visibly changed.

The woman is not worse. That is worth saying and Hannah forgets it: she is not worse than she was in 2016 and there were two years in there where things could have gone very badly and did not, and Hannah was in the middle of both of them.

But there is nothing to point at. Nine years, a hundred conversations, and if you asked what had changed the honest answer is: nothing you could photograph.

And so on Tuesday there was half a second of something when the name came up, and Hannah has been quietly ashamed of it since.

You have your own version. There is a name, and there is a half second, and you have never told anybody about the half second because saying it out loud would sound like you had stopped caring.

Nobody here is going to tell you the half second means you have stopped. It does not, and you know it does not, or it would not bother you.

But there is an instruction in Thessalonians that assumes exactly this, and the assumption is the comfort.

The Same Conversation Again

The instruction has repetition built into it

There is a verse near the end of 1 Thessalonians that lists what to do with different kinds of people, and the last clause covers everybody.

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.1 Thessalonians 5:14

Be patient toward all men.

Patience is a word that only exists because things take a long time. You do not need patience for a thing that resolves. The instruction assumes, without ever stating it, that the warning and the comforting and the supporting will have to happen more than once, and probably many times, and that the person doing it will need something in order to keep going.

And notice that the patience is listed last, after the three activities. It is not one more task alongside them. It is the thing that holds the other three up over time.

That is a description of Hannah's nine years, given as an instruction, in a letter, with no expectation attached about when it would stop being necessary.

And repetition is inside the assignment rather than evidence against it. That is not my softening: the written word puts patience at the end of a list of things done to people, which only makes sense if those things recur, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a woman ashamed of half a second.

And you are supported while you are supporting. The word says the Lord is thy keeper, and the keeping is His verb over the one doing the work, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a real supply rather than an encouragement offered to somebody running on empty.

What the half second actually is

Here is the part worth being precise about, because the shame is misdirected.

The half second is not a moral event. It is fatigue, and fatigue is a signal about a body rather than a verdict on a heart.

A hundred conversations is a great deal. If Hannah had run a hundred miles she would not be ashamed of her legs aching, and she would not conclude from the ache that she had stopped wanting to run.

The reason it feels different is that this ache shows up attached to a person's name, and so it seems to be about the person. It is not. It is about the hundred.

And you have not stopped loving her. The word says charity beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things, and endureth is a word that assumes weight rather than ease, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person recognize endurance in themselves rather than reading tiredness as a failure of love.

And nothing about those nine years has been wasted. The word says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and the labor is named in that sentence rather than the results, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a real accounting.

Nobody is telling you to fix her

I want that said plainly, because a message like this can quietly suggest that nine years without change means you are doing it wrong and should try a different approach.

You almost certainly are not doing it wrong. Some situations run for decades. Some run for a lifetime and are held rather than solved, and the holding is the ministry, and nothing in Scripture promises you a resolution you can point at.

And nobody is telling you to step back either. I do not know your capacity or your situation, and a stranger who tells you to draw a boundary or not to draw one is guessing about a person they have never met.

What is available is this: the half second is fatigue, the fatigue is honest, and the instruction you are under has patience built into it, which means somebody anticipated exactly this and wrote you into the sentence.

And you are not required to produce a change. The word gives warning, comforting, supporting and patience as the actions, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person do the actions without holding themselves responsible for the outcome.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is her name.

Say it out loud. Again. Tonight, in a room by yourself.

Say it slowly, the way you would say it if she were sitting there, and then say one true thing about where she actually is at the moment. Not the situation. Her.

That is the hundred and first, and it takes nine seconds, and it is the whole job.

Patience was built into the instruction from the beginning. The word lists it last as the thing that holds the others up, and the Spirit is the one who supplies it rather than requiring you to generate it after nine years.

And staying is the work. The word says be patient toward all men and puts no end date on it, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit about what you have been doing since 2016.

Say her name. The half second can come too, and it does not mean what you thought.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Half second when the name comes up, you are fatigue and you have never once been a verdict. Scripture puts patience at the end of a list of things done to people, which only makes sense if they recur.
  2. Old shame about being tired, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. A hundred conversations is a hundred conversations, and an ache in the legs has never meant a person stopped wanting to run.
  3. Lord, be patient toward all men is the instruction and it has no end date in it, and You are my keeper while I keep. Staying is the work I was given, I am not behind because I am still here, and saying her name again tonight is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
